The MISSION of the LMF is to help people affected by carcinoid and other rare cancers through funding research for new treatments, providing financial support for patients and their families, and promoting awareness and education.
Why the Zebra? As a reminder to consider uncommon alternatives when making a diagnosis, medical students are often told, "When you hear hoof beats don't assume it's a horse, it might be a zebra." The Lois Merrill Foundation (LMF) is a non-profit organization founded in 2007 in honor of Lois Merrill. Lois passed away in 2006 from carcinoid cancer, a rare neuroendocrine cancer. Lois was a devoted wife, mother and school teacher whose passion for life and sincere desire to help others lives on through The LMF.
The Lois Merrill Foundation funds Medical Assistance Grants and Foundation Assistance Grants. Medical Assistance Grants provide patients in financial need with medical expense assistance. Foundation Assistance Grants provide non-profit organizations with funds to support research and education in conjunction with the goals of the foundation. The Lois Merrill Foundation has awarded nearly $180,000 in Medical and Foundation Assistance Grants. These include grants to non-profit organizations who not only fund cutting-edge clinical research, but also host patient-specific seminars to enable caricnoid cancer patients a direct opportunity to talk with doctors and learn about treatments. We have also awarded nearly $100,000 in Medical Assistance Grants to over 70 patients nationwide who cannot afford to pay for their essential medical treatments. These are the current and future focus of our organization.
